DESAIN BARU BUNGKUS ROKOK DI AS

Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan Amerika Serikat (FDA) memperkenalkan sembilan desain baru peringatan bergambar pada kemasan rokok kepada publik. Ini merupakan salah satu langkah nyata dari lembaga pengawas tersebut untuk mengatur penggunaan produk tembakau di Negeri Paman Sam.

Sekretaris Pelayanan Kesehatan FDA Kathleen Sebelius menegaskan, peluncuran desain baru kemasan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kesedaran warga akan bahaya dan risiko akibat merokok. "Melalui peringatan ini, setiap orang yang mengambil sebungkus rokok akan menyadari sebesar apa risiko yang akan mereka dapatkan," ujarnya.

Data di Amerika menyebutkan, perilaku merokok dan penggunaan produk tembakau lainnya merupakan penyebab utama dari kematian yang dapat dicegah. Jumlah korban meninggal akibat menghisap tembakau mencapai 440.000 jiwa setiap tahunnya.

Desain baru kemasan tersebut terdiri dari gambar berwarna terang dan sebuah kalimat peringatan dampak dari merokok. Kalimat tersebut di antaranya "Cigarettes are addictive"; "Tobacco smoke can harm your children"; "Cigarettes cause fatal lung disease"; "Cigarettes cause cancer"; "Cigarettes cause strokes and heart disease"; "Smoking during pregnancy can harm your baby"; "Smoking can kill you"; "Tobacco smoke causes fatal lung disease in nonsmokers"; and "Quitting smoking now greatly reduces serious risks to your health."

Menurut FDA, desain baru peringatan ini rencanaya paling lambat akan diterapkan mulai September 2012 ini.
